Book Drive is a Success!

A huge thanks goes at to all who supported the book drive that helped collect over 1,600 books to benefit incarcerated individuals! This was an amazing collaborative effort with Hudson Valley Community College, Russell Sage College, Columbia University and the NYS Department of Correction and Community Supervision. The books were collected, sorted and boxed before being distributed to Greene Correctional Facility, Coxsackie Correctional Facility and Washington Correctional Facility.

The impact of these donations can serve as a catalyst for positive change. A librarian at the Washington Correctional Facility noted that their population all enjoy reading, so these book donations are truly appreciated. The state allocates only $9 for each incarcerated individual for books, which is barely enough for one book. Access to these books can play an important role in inmate rehabilitation by helping to build literacy and education level.

Special thanks to Michael Galvin, HVCC Class of ’23 alumni, currently studying Financial Economics at Columbia University, who helped coordinate efforts on his campus.

Special thanks to Tonya Moutray, professor of English and Honors Program Director at Russell Sage College, who helped coordinate the efforts on her campus.

Special thanks to the members of the HVCC Honors College and Student Senate for their efforts with promoting this event and help with sorting and boxing the books.

Special thanks to Joe Bode, senior stores clerk, for transporting all the books to the three correctional facilities, which such enthusiasm and determination.
